Surgicil Corporation has introduced a new soft, rubbery, quite pliable, and natural feeling silicone implant for the lips which may provide the long term solution for patients  unsatisfied with repeat injections of fillers such as restylane, juviderm, and fat.   The PERMALIP implant is made of FDA approved silicone and the device itself is FDA approved for facial enhancement.

The lips are measured side to side, and the patient is asked about extent of perking of the lips desired. The implants come in three lengths and three  thickening sizes. This is not the same as bulking of the lips!!!!!  An appropriate implant is selected.  Local anesthetic is injected into the lips.  Small cuts are made inside the upper and lower lips,  a tunnel is made, and the worm-like elongated soft implant is threaded inside. A single stitch is placed at each corner which is removed in a few days. One or both lips may be enhanced at the same session.

The operation takes less than an hour as a rule. The lips in the first 10 days may have a duck-like appearance which subsides to a more natural perking pouting appearance at a month or more.  The results are more than subtle, to give the lip appearance a perky look similar to fillers. It is not designed for major size increase which, for permanent implants such as Soft form and Advanta, can look and feel quite unnatural and board like. Like all permanent type implants, it may be removed later if desired, and may experience problems from which it is necessary to remove.  It seems to be a softer more environment-friendly implant for the lips, and time will tell whether it might be a reasonable alternative for consumers who have used lip fillers in the past, or wish to have a one-time solution.  The implant is not degradable and is quite stable, but it is possible that it may need to be changed several years later.

The device is not the same as injection of liquid silicone which can migrate and cause unpleasant hardness over time.
There should be no concern over allergic reactivity with this implant.
Risks include asymmetry, infection, implant break (rare), unusual unnatural feel, need for revision, decision to remove, and desire to change size up or down
